Are dairy and eggs unsuitable for autistic children?

Asked by AutDHD Editorial

Food, diet & gut health

There is no universal rule requiring autistic children to avoid dairy or eggs. Community answers consistently recommended checking the individual child: note digestive symptoms, allergy signs and clear, repeatable changes after eating a food. Many autistic children tolerate milk and eggs without difficulty.

If an allergy or intolerance is confirmed, discuss a nutritionally complete alternative plan. Common calcium sources include ragi, sesame, nuts, seeds and leafy greens; protein options depend on the child’s diet and may include pulses, soya, nuts, seeds or meat. Avoid blanket elimination diets because they can create nutritional gaps.

Safety note: This summarises community experience for general awareness and is not medical advice. Every child is different. Confirm diet, testing, supplements, medication and treatment decisions with your child’s doctor or a suitably qualified professional. Never stop prescribed medication without the prescribing doctor.
