Food, diet & gut health
Mouthing non-food items may reflect oral-sensory seeking or pica. Community responses suggested discussing basic iron and zinc investigations with the child’s doctor and obtaining an occupational-therapy assessment for oral sensory needs. Gut testing is not automatically the cause or solution for mouthing; consider it only when a qualified clinician recommends it for specific symptoms.
Parents also reported improvement with consistent safe oral-sensory input and close supervision. Keep soaps, lotions, powders and hazardous items inaccessible.
Safety note: This summarises community experience for general awareness and is not medical advice. Every child is different. Confirm diet, testing, supplements, medication and treatment decisions with your child’s doctor or a suitably qualified professional. Never stop prescribed medication without the prescribing doctor.
