Behaviour & safety
Elopement is a safety priority. Immediate measures can include secure age-appropriate door safeguards, alarms, identification information, informing trusted neighbours or building staff, and close supervision near roads and water. A qualified behaviour professional should assess whether the function is escape, access, sensory input or the reaction created by being chased, then teach safer replacement communication and “stop/wait” skills.
If behaviour changed after a medication adjustment, contact the prescribing doctor. Do not stop medication based on peer advice.
Safety note: This summarises community experience for general awareness and is not medical advice. Every child is different. Confirm diet, testing, supplements, medication and treatment decisions with your child’s doctor or a suitably qualified professional. Never stop prescribed medication without the prescribing doctor.
