A shadow teacher can help a child participate in classroom routines, communicate needs and gradually become more independent. The right person should support inclusion—not sit beside the child all day, complete work for them or separate them from classmates.
Before hiring, ask the school what support it permits and obtain written approval for the role, timings and access. Then define three practical goals, such as entering class calmly, following a visual timetable or requesting a break. A vague promise to “manage the child” is not a support plan.
Review the candidate’s identity, qualifications, child-facing experience and references. If the person presents themselves as a special educator or another regulated rehabilitation professional, ask for the applicable Rehabilitation Council of India Central Rehabilitation Register number and verify that it is active. A CRR check does not replace references, safeguarding review or observation of how the person interacts with your child.
During the interview, ask how they respond to distress, refusal, sensory overload and toileting needs. Good answers protect dignity, use minimal prompting and involve the teacher. Red flags include punishment, forced eye contact, secretive sessions, guaranteed results or requests to privately message the child.
Agree in writing on attendance, confidentiality, phone use, emergency contacts, incident reporting, replacement notice and who supervises the shadow teacher. Providers should not transport a child unless a separate, properly assessed arrangement exists.
Use an observed trial before committing long-term. Watch whether the child appears safer and more included, and whether support fades when possible. Review goals with the parent, teacher and provider every few weeks.
