An “inclusive” label is useful only when everyday practice welcomes and supports different learners. Before paying fees, visit the preschool during normal activity and ask concrete questions. The quality of the answers matters more than colourful therapy claims.
Ask these 12 questions:
- How do teachers support children who communicate differently?
- What is the adult-to-child ratio during class, meals and outdoor play?
- Can my child use AAC, visual supports, headphones or a comfort item?
- How are sensory breaks provided without punishment or isolation?
- What happens during a meltdown or shutdown?
- How do you prevent and respond to bullying?
- Are toilets accessible, supervised and respectful of privacy?
- How are food allergies, selective eating and medicines handled?
- May parents observe the classroom and meet the lead teacher?
- How are goals and incidents communicated to families?
- What training and background checks do staff have?
- Can the school provide reasonable accommodations in writing?
Look beyond a prepared tour. Notice whether adults speak respectfully, children can move safely, visual information is available and distressed children receive calm support. Ask for written policies on safeguarding, pickup, emergencies, privacy, complaints and fee refunds.
Share a concise child-support profile, but do not hand over unnecessary medical records or allow private information to circulate casually. If the school requires a shadow teacher, clarify who supervises that person and how independence will be reviewed.
Finally, arrange a short trial or gradual start when possible. A good setting is not one with zero difficulty; it is one that listens, adapts and works transparently with the family.
