Home visits can reduce travel, reveal real daily challenges and make parent coaching easier. They also bring a provider into private family space, so convenience must be matched with clear safety and professional boundaries.
Before the first session, verify the provider’s identity, qualifications, work history and two recent references. For roles regulated by the Rehabilitation Council of India, request the applicable CRR number and check its current status. Do not treat a centre logo, social-media profile or broad “verified” badge as proof of every credential.
Agree on the service in writing: goals, session length, fee, cancellations, who will attend, materials used and how progress will be reviewed. A parent or authorised adult should remain present during the pilot. Sessions should occur in an appropriate shared space—not behind a locked door. Providers should not photograph, record or post about a child without specific informed consent.
Observe the interaction. The provider should explain what they are doing, respond to the child’s communication, protect dignity and teach caregivers strategies that fit ordinary routines. Red flags include guaranteed cures, pressure to buy large packages, punishment, forced physical contact, secretive methods, requests to privately contact the child or advice to stop prescribed treatment.
Keep emergency contacts available and document any injury, safeguarding concern or serious incident promptly. Review after two or three sessions: Is the goal clear? Is the child recovering well? Can the family use the strategies? Is the provider punctual and transparent?
Home therapy is effective when the professional, plan and family fit—not simply because it happens at home.
Parent takeaway: verify, observe and review before committing.
