Moving Between Activities: A Gentle Transition Plan for Autistic and ADHD Children

Stopping something absorbing and beginning something new can be a major task. An autistic or ADHD child may need to disengage attention, manage an unfinished idea, understand what comes next and cope with a sensory change—all within a few minutes. Difficulty moving is not necessarily defiance. It often means the transition needs more support.

The National Autistic Society recommends clear language, processing time and visual supports that show both the stages and the outcome of a change. Those principles can help with everyday shifts such as play to bath, screen to dinner or home to school.

Make the next step visible

Use a simple first–then card, two photos or a written note: “First blocks away, then shoes.” Keep the language brief and consistent. Some children prefer a countdown; others find countdowns stressful. Try a visual timer, a song, a “two more turns” cue or a clock time, then observe what genuinely helps.

Create a respectful ending

Before moving on, help the child preserve what matters. Photograph the block tower, save the game, mark the page, or place an unfinished project on a “continue later” tray. A clear ending reduces the fear that stopping means losing the activity forever.

Use a bridge

A bridging object or job can connect the two activities. The child might carry the bath towel, choose the dinner cup, bring one small toy to the car, or tick the finished step. Movement, headphones or a short quiet pause can also help the nervous system shift gears.

If the transition still stalls, reduce words, allow more time and check basics: hunger, fatigue, pain, sensory load or uncertainty. Afterwards, adjust the plan rather than adding shame. AutDHD’s guides to visual routines and gentle task launches offer related ideas.
